Collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, clippings, and other published materials related to the life of newspaper publisher, socialist, and author Shigeki Oka. Clippings and published materials relate to research for Oka's publications and includes information about Abiko Kyutaro and pre-war Japanese newspaper articles. Also includes a small collection of correspondence and miscellaneous manuscripts written during his internment at Heart Mountain (ca. 1942), manuscripts of Oka articles, and 1 diary.

The Japanese American Research Project (originally named the Issei History Project) was initiated by Wakamatsu Shigeo, President of the Japanese American citizens League (JACL) in 1960. Oka was a native of Kochi Prefecture, born 1878; employed by Yorozu Chōhō before relocating to the US; he arrived in the US, 1902; he was an influential journalist in the pre-war Japanese community and operated the Kinmon Press (San Francisco) and published the Amerika Shimbun and Ofu Nippo (Sacramento daily news); was briefly interned at Heart Mountain but was released to engage in propaganda activities against Japan on behalf of the British Armed Forces in India during WWII.
